Gulf of Aden - Revised Maritime Security Patrol Area

Gulf of Aden - Revised Maritime Security Patrol Area
Continuing Piracy in the Gulf of Aden - now being met headon with new Patrolled Maritime Security area

A Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) has been established to provide a route through the Gulf of Aden which will be patrolled by Combined Task Force (CTF) 150. Whilst it cannot guarantee that attacks will not happen, it is hoped that 150 assets will be able to respond faster to any attacks and the patrols will act as a deterrent.

On 01 February 2009, the Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) in the Gulf of Aden (GOA) is going to be revised to reduce the risk of collision between vessels utilizing the corridor, provide a measure of traffic separation, and allow maritime forces to conduct deterrent operations in the GOA with a greater degree of flexibility.

The incidence of Piracy attacks in this area have increased exponentially over the last 24 months and it is hoped that this initiative will assist in providing some degree of protection to merchant shipping and cruising vessels.
